On Assignment
You never know what you are going to run into on an assignment as a photojournalist. The day can go from chasing weather art to chasing, or being chased by, walls of flames. Every day offers different views and opportunities. Through it all, the job is to be there to capture the scene yet not be part of it. The images in this exhibition are pulled from the front pages covering breaking news, world events and daily assignments.
Photographers are great problem solvers, and the photojournalist is the greatest problem solver of them all. Trained to look at the world with a documentary eye, they must not only be a master of their equipment, as well as every discipline of photography, but must too be the master of surveillance, constantly scanning the horizon and situation to see where best to capture a moment, not make a moment, but be there ready, lying in wait, to seize it in their lens. Ready to react in a split second to changing weather, temperament or a number of conditions, the photojournalist puts themselves in the way of danger to capture images to tell stories and preserve history, all the while providing society with the visual record of what is truly happening around the world.
Photojournalists hold the world accountable, many times at the cost of their own lives, relationships and mental health. Without their veracity and dedication, the social landscape we live in would be drastically different. This exhibition is dedicated to every person who has done the profession honor in the past, present and those yet to come. May the shutters keep clicking and may the images keep us all accountable.
